You would be helping people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice (after training).

• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing
• Ability to sift through information and extract what is relevant
• Basic mathematical skills, including percentages
• Respect for views, values and cultures that are different to their own
• An understanding of why confidentiality is important
• Being open to using computers on a regular basis
• A positive attitude to self-development and assessment
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to recognise their own limits and boundaries in the role
•Ability to work in a busy, sometimes pressured environment.


Working hours are Monday to Friday in the morning and afternoon. Volunteer expenses will be reimbursed.

The training programme prior to interviewing clients consists of group training sessions in the bureau, observation of experienced advisers in interviews, self-study at home, and one day external course. This part of the training takes approximately 4 months. During the following 6 to 8 months you would have further in-bureau training and attend external courses, to complete to Certificate. They ask for a commitment of 2 half days or 1 full day per week when interviewing, plus attendance at monthly Bureau Meetings and ongoing training.
