If you have parenting experience, understand the challenges of family life and have 3 hours to spare each week you would make an ideal Home-Start volunteer.

Their volunteers help in a variety of family situations from multiple birth, post-natal depression, bereavement, illness or disability, lack of parenting experience.

Volunteer visits could include modelling play and interaction with children to improve parental skill, accompanying family to local services, listening and befriending, teaching a parent to cook healthy affordable family meals.

What they offer volunteers:

Free preparation training - volunteers complete a 40 hour training
Free on-going training/support sessions 4 times per year
Regular one-to-one supervision
What are they looking for?

First hand parenting experience
Good communication skills
Empathy and good listening skills
Understand the pressures of bringing up children
Ability to work on own (visiting a family)
Willingness to accept supervision
Agree to complete written records
At least 3 hours to spare per week


Working hours are a minimum of 3 per week, however the available framework is Monday to Friday mornings and afternoons. Volunteer expenses will be reimbursed.

Age requirements: Over 18
