Cooks - St Lukes, Cheltenham  with Cheltenham Senior Citizens Welfare Committee (Ref: 282)

Opportunity picture
Do you enjoy cooking simple, hearty and tasty home cooked food?

Would you like to help cook a meal at a Lunch Club for people who will really appreciate your food?

When elderly people live on their own they may not always eat well, and so thoroughly enjoy their trips out for a proper nutritious meal with a friendly group of people.

The people who use this service perhaps do not see anyone until they come to the centre once a week and so the help you can provide is invaluable.

It is hoped to build up a small, friendly team of volunteers who can all work together:
- making and serving a welcome cup of tea
- peeling and chopping to help prepare and cook a simple meat and 2 veg kind of meal for about 12 persons
- serve it to the Lunch Club attendees (and enjoy the meal yourself too)
- fill up the dishwasher and tidy the kitchen

There is a fully equipped kitchen to make the work easier with water boiler, large gas/electric range cooker, microwave, food mixer and dishwasher.

It is not required for all roles but there is the potential opportunity for a permanent cook to do the 1 day Food Hygiene and Handling course at Gloscat (paid for by the Senior Citizens Committee).
What are they looking for?

Cooks need to be able to provide simple home cooked meals of the meat and two veg type. If a volunteer cook is qualified that would be a bonus but willingness to volunteer in the first place and then turn up regularly is the most important thing. only basic meals are required - not Corden Bleu! (The elderly attendees do not tend to like pasta, curry or exotic foods). Hygiene awareness is paramount.
