Listening Volunteer  with Samaritans - Cheltenham (Ref: 501)

Listening Volunteers are needed to provide confidential and emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair. Common reasons to call Samaritans are; relationship and family problems, loss, including loss of a job, a friend or a family member through bereavement, financial worries, job-related stress or overwork, college or study related stress, body image issues.

Volunteers offer support by responding to phone calls, emails and letters. Full training is given.
Please note that this is not counselling, it is a listening service.

This role is not suitable for volunteers looking for shorter-termed placements due to the training needed to be a Listening Volunteer.

Volunteers from all age groups are welcomed, however the minimum age for this role is 18. Ramp available for disabled access to the building.
What are they looking for?

For this role you need to be able to listen to callers and not give advice but help the caller to talk through the problem in a non-judgemental way. You will need to maintain confidentiality at all times, and deal sensitively with callers including vulnerable people, those with mental health issues and children.

Initial and on-going training is provided for this role.
