As a mentor you will be a positive role model, and inspiration for young people. The role will involve:
Meeting with a young person on a regular basis, to help them identify and achieve agreed goals around employment, volunteering or training
Exploring strengths with your mentee so they are able to realise their true ambitions and secure opportunities.
Encouraging your mentee to participate in employment or education by building their confidence, celebrating success and supporting them through any challenges they may face.
Signposting and referring your mentee for additional support as appropriate
Staying in regular contact with your mentee, to ensure positive outcomes
Providing basic reports after mentoring session

The aim of the mentoring programme is to help change the lives of local unemployed young people, the group that is sometimes referred to as 'NEET' (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

YG will match volunteer mentors to young people with similar backgrounds and interests, and provide training and resources to help ensure the best possible outcomes for young people and mentors alike.

What skills do I need?

Young Gloucestershire will provide all relevant support and training necessary to become a successful mentor, however the following skills would be beneficial:
A passion for making a difference to a young person's life
Ability to listen, empathise and understand young peoples' opinions
Be flexible to the challenging needs of young people
Build and maintain rapport over a sustained period of time

Full training will be given so no skills or qualifications are necessary; however, a genuine interest in helping young people is essential. Experience working with young people in the past would be advantageous but not essential. Willingness to provide full references and complete a DBS check.


Working days are Monday to Friday in the afternoon and evening. Volunteer expenses will be reimbursed.
