Green Space Volunteers  with Green Space Volunteers for Winston Churchill Memorial Garden with Honeybourne Line (North) (Ref: 830)

Opportunity picture
You will be part of a small team of Volunteers who care for a section of the Honeybourne Line, which is a decommissioned railway cutting from Cheltenham station to the Prince of Wales Athletic Stadium. The work also includes a beautiful large walled garden off the lower end of the High Street which connects to the Honeybourne Line.

These green spaces need care and attention, which is not always possible given the tight budgets of the Borough Council. However, they work with a dedicated Community Ranger, Janice Peacey, who joins them for their work parties.

They meet on the fourth Thursday morning of each calendar month from 9am to 12 noon. This will increase when they build up their pool of volunteers.

They are hoping to rejuvenate the Winston Churchill Memorial Garden, making it more attractive to users and increasing its footfall, and are also clearing the Jubilee (Waitrose) Bridge of brambles which encroach along the pathway, and doing some sympathetic planting of trees, shrubs and wild flowers. You will be making a significant contribution to these important green spaces in the heart of Cheltenham.

You will benefit from being outdoors (dressed appropriately) in the fresh air, taking exercise without feeling the pressure of a sports club or gym environment (as you do what you feel you can do, within your physical limits). The social aspects are informal and they have fun and do not take themselves too seriously; however they are acting on behalf of the Council’s Green Space Development Team so need to remain polite to members of the passing public, who often compliment them for what they are doing.

Although you can bring your own tools, e.g. favourite shears or secatuers, they can be provided; third party insurance is also given by the Council.

So if you like to do general tidying up, gardening, learn about conservation and wildlife and love the outdoors, then this is a Group for you to volunteer with.
