Kitchen Assistant  with Guideposts Trust (Ref: 835)
Opportunity picture
They are looking for suitable volunteers who will enjoy working in a day care setting. The role will involve helping with preparing and delivering nutritious meals, good hygiene practice and empathising with people with disabilities especially dementia.

Working alongside people with dementia can be very rewarding. Knowing you can make a difference to their overall wellbeing and happiness can be very fulfilling.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn more about dementia and related conditions through workshops etc. if they so wish.

They are a well established day centre (10 years) and have gained a good name and relationship with other professional bodies.

Volunteers are not expected to carry out any personal care, manual handling or first aid.

They do a lot of reminiscence therapy and "Life History Stories" to help cognitive abilities. They try to involve all service users in an activity of their choice, enabling them to perhaps pursue hobbies that they have not been able to do for a while - they can regain some control and independence.

Occasionally they have entertainment, outings to local places and speakers.
What are they looking for?

Mostly, someone who is kind, empathetic and willing to learn.

Ideally they are looking for volunteers who have some understanding of dementia but training can be given.

Any training or experience in arts and crafts would be a bonus.

Every Wednesday morning and afternoon, the opportunity takes place at St. Catherine's Court, Tredworth, Gloucester, GL1 4PX. Every other Thursday morning and afternoon, the opportunity takes place at St. Peter's Social Club, Black Dog Way, Gloucester, GL1 3AF. The amount of time you donate is flexible.
